One impressive statistic from the 2010 weather data that was recorded at my house was the highest amount of liquid rainfall accumulating in a 24-hour period. Signaling the end of summer and an extreme drought, my station recorded 3.36″ of rain in a single day. The radar loop from the day is impressive as well. The rain was spawned from the remnants of Nicole and a coastal low.<\/p>\n

Whether you attribute it to nature or the annual arrival of the State Fair of Virginia, the region finally is getting a heavy dose of rain.<\/p>\n

It could cause some minor flooding of roads and low areas, but overall the rain should be good for the drought-stricken region, experts say.<\/p>\n

“This is something we needed, to get a widespread, decent rainfall,” said Chris Wamsley, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Wakefield.<\/p>\n

A flash-flood watch is in effect until tonight.<\/p>\n

Rainfall in the Richmond area from yesterday through tonight could total 2 to 4 inches and possibly more in places. Parts of southeastern Virginia could see 6 inches or more.<\/p>\n

The heaviest rain, possibly accompanied by thunderstorms, should fall today as the remnants of Tropical Storm Nicole move up through Virginia, forecasters said.<\/p>\n

Only about a half-inch had fallen in the Richmond area by early last night.<\/p>\n

Many Richmonders say jokingly that the heavens finally are opening up because the State Fair of Virginia is under way. Fair officials even put out a news release yesterday making light of the situation.<\/p>\n

“We know we have a responsibility to the commonwealth to bring rain to the drought-stricken land, and we apologize for the delay,” State Fair President Curry Roberts said in an e-mail.<\/p>\n

“With so much going on to prepare for opening day of the State Fair, we simply forgot to arrange our annual rain dance. However, the issue has been rectified and farmers and gardeners alike can start breathing a collective sigh of relief.”<\/p>\n

The fair doesn’t always bring rain, but there is some truth behind that perception, said Jerry Stenger, director of the University of Virginia’s climatology office.<\/p>\n

The last week in September — prime State Fair time — is tied for 13th among Virginia’s wettest weeks and averages 0.95 inch of rain, Stenger said.<\/p>\n

“It’s one of the wetter weeks on average but not the wettest,” Stenger said. The week beginning July 9 is the wettest, at 1.46 inches.<\/p>\n

But this is the time of year that Virginia moves from the thunderstorms of summer — lots of rain in brief periods — to a more winterlike pattern of long, persistent rains.<\/p>\n

“We get those rainfalls that last all day and make the fairgrounds wet and muddy and generally feel unpleasant,” Stenger said.<\/p>\n

“It’s true, it is a rather wet week, but I think a lot of [the fair-means-rain notion] has to do with perception.”<\/p>\n
